About the Humane Society of Amherst County

Since 1974, the Humane Society of Amherst County as provided a temporary home for lost and unwanted pets. Largely due to the generosity of the people of Amherst County and surrounding areas, the current shelter was built in 1975 and opened to receive animals on January 12, 1976.

From the beginning, the shelter and its services have been available to residents of Amherst County. These services have been and will continue to be financed primarily by the contributions and cooperation of Amherst County citizens.

Each year the shelter receives more than 2200 dogs and cats. Through the shelter's adoption services, local homes are found for roughly ten percent of those animals. Many are also sent to rescue groups in other states, making our adoption rate closer to 36%. More than 100 lost dogs and cats are returned to their owners each year.

Policies and activities of the Humane Society and its Animal Shelter are administered by a Board of Directors. Elected members of this board include professional and lay people  who all share a strong concern for and commitment to animal welfare.

The Humane Society of Amherst County depends on You:

The abandoned animals who are given refuge at our shelter are the real beneficiaries of your generous financial support. For, without your contributions, the shelter could not meet the daily expnses required to operate. Please consider giving to our capital campaign to continue funding our programs and providing for the homeless animals of Amherst County. All gifts and contributions to Humane Society of Amherst County are tax deductible.
