Our brand-new adoption center opened for business on November 1, 2008. The new facility has been under construction since 2007 and was in the planning stages since 2004. The new building has an outdoor play area for the dogs, an interview room for prospective adopters to interact with pets, and a gift shop. It also has state of the art waste removal systems and air handling, and warm, sunlit enlosed kennels for the animals.
This new facility is built on land that was donated to the Humane Society by Gert Prior. The original building, built in 1974, and the Blue Ridge Pet Cemetery are also on the property. The County of Amherst has now taken over repsonsibility for the intake of stray and owner-surrendered animals, leaving HSAC to focus on adoptions, education and fund-raising. HSAC will continue to take owner-surrendered animals as well for a $15 surrender fee. This fee helps offset the cost of feeding the animal.
The Adoption Center has 14 kennels for dogs and 8 cat cages plus extra kennels in isolation. There is a grooming room, a food prep area and extra work space.
