Blue Ridge Pet Cemetery

Meditation Garden in the Cemetery

The Blue Ridge Pet Cemetery is a service offered by the Humane Society of Amherst County as an alternative for those who want a permanent burial space for their pet. The site was dedicated on August 24, 1983 and since then many beloved pets have been buried there. The cemetery is maintained on a volunteer basis, and there is a $75.00 donation fee which covers the cost of burial and a numbered foot marker. Any permanent marker must be flat to the ground to allow for mowing. One containter of flowers is permitted. Any questions or comments may be made to the Humane Society of Amherst County, 318 Shelter Lane, Amherst Va 24521, or by phone at 434-946-2340.

Jacob Dobyns

Recently a local Boy Scout, Jacob Dobyns, chose the Humane Society of Amherst County as his Eagle Scout project. Jacob organized over 27 volunteers and spent numerous hours renovating the Blue Ridge Pet Cemetery. They replaced the fence, built and painted benches, landscaped the meditation garden, painted and moved the sign and painted and installed two gates. The volunteers also spent many hours clearing brush so the cemetery could be expanded, and plan to continue working on landscaping around the new building. Thanks so much to Jacob for all of his hard work, and thanks also to the many local vendors who supplied hardware or other items.
