More than 30 pets find a new home up north each week when animal transporter volunteers drive to New Jersey. Well before the crack of dawn on Saturdays there are volunteers at the shelter, loading up animals and their drinking water for the trip up north. Not all of these animals come from our shelter, other local shelters such as Campbell County Humane Society also send animals north. We have several rescue groups we work with to find homes for our adoptable animals. Most of the northern states have such strict spay/neuter and leash laws that the shelters don't have many adoptable pets. Recently some of our pups were on NBC's Today show when one of the rescues, Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter, was featured during an episode on adopting shelter pets and Petfinder.com. In 2009 we had an average of 32 dogs and 3 cats go north each month. Hopefully the cat numbers will increase in 2010 with the addition of a new cat rescue group.
How you can help: The cost of gas on these trips is significant -- gas cards or cash for our transport program is greatly needed. Or, if you are an early riser we can use volunteers to help load animals on transport days, usually about 5:00am on Saturdays. We also need drivers! We have two vans at our disposal now but don't always have drivers, and sometimes the drivers like an extra person to ride along. On Thursdays we prepare the crates and paperwork for each animal being transferred, and we need volunteers to help with the vet work as they get their health certificates and shots before traveling. Please contact us at 434-946-2340 if you can help in any way.
