Pet Transport to northeast for easy adoption

For several years HSAC has participated in an animal transport program to get adoptable animals to shelters and rescues in New Jersey. In 2010 we found that about 46% of our dogs were saved by going to rescues in New Jersey. Well before the crack of dawn on Saturdays there are volunteers at the shelter, loading up animals and their drinking water for the trip up north. Other local animal shelters, including Campbell County and Halifax bring animals for the transport as well. We have several rescue groups we work with to find homes for our adoptable animal up north. Most of the northern states have such strict spay/neuter and leash laws that the shelters don't have many adoptable pets. Recently some of our pups were on NBC's Today show when one of the rescues, Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter, was featured during an episode on adopting shelter pets and Petfinder.com. In 2009 we had an average of 32 dogs and 3 cats go north each month. We are now able to save more cats with the help of Purrs n Pups and North Shore Animal Rescue League, which recently took 26 cats and kittens from our shelter! The new cargo van provided by Gateway Regional Rescue allows us to transport many more animals from the area to new homes in New Jersey.

How you can help: The cost of gas on these trips is significant -- gas cards or cash for our transport program is greatly needed. Or, if you are an early riser we can use volunteers to help load animals on transport days, usually about 5:00am on Saturdays. We also need drivers! We have two vans at our disposal now but don't always have drivers, and sometimes the drivers like an extra person to ride along. On Thursdays we prepare the crates and paperwork for each animal being transferred, and we need volunteers to help with the vet work as they get their health certificates and shots before traveling. Please contact us at 434-946-2340 if you can help in any way.
