The Humane Society of Amherst County offers spay/neuter assistance to Amherst residents based upon an applicant's income and is made possible by grants and participating veterinarians. Most recently this program was made possible by the Greg Biffle Foundation and Amherst Veterinary Hospital, Diamond Hill Animal Hospital and Monelison Animal Clinic. To be eligible, the applicant should meet one of the following income levels:
Single Person (no children) $20,000 a year or less, gross income
Married Person (no children) $30,000 a year or less, combined gross income
Married Person (with children) $40,000 a year or under, combined gross income
Single Parent (with children) $40,000 a year or under gross income
After approval the fees are as follows:
Cat Neuter: $25
Cat Spay: $35
Dog Neuter: $40
Dog Spay: $45 under 50 pounds
$55 over 50 pounds
Each animal must show proof of rabies vaccination or will be vaccinated at owner's expense.
Each applicant must:
1) Be a resident of Amherst County
2) Bring proof of income (pay stub or letter from employer)
3) Bring a copy of last year's income tax return

If you are approved, the Humane Society will issue a certificate and assign a vet. The approved applicant should then make their own arrangements with the assigned vet for the spay/neuter surgery.
