Our volunteers are vital:
Not everyone can adopt a pet, and many may feel that they have nothing to offer the Humane Society of Amherst County. Whether you are young or old, working or retired - whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week - we welcome your help. You must be 18 years of age to work with animals at the Adoption Center.
Please Note: We are in desperate need of good, reliable volunteers for the options below shown in bold lettering:
Play with the cats: Anytime our shelter is open you are welcome to hold and play with our cats and kittens.
Walk the dogs: All of our dogs need love and attention! Some are just learning to walk on a leash.
Club activities: If you are a member of a club or organization, you could hold a fundraising day on our behalf. All donations are gratefully received.
Sign up to help take our animals to adoption days at Petsmart, Walmart and other local events.
Rummage Sale: Collect items for our annual rummage sale, work on the day of the sale, and help to sort, tag and price items.
Phone calls and emails: We always have plenty of phone calls and emails to return regarding specific pets. Sometimes we just need more information about a particular animal so that we can find the appropriate home. This is a great way for the homebound folks to help.
Animal Transport: Shelter animals are transported to the veterinarian, to the South Central Spay/Neuter Clinic, or to rescue groups all over the east coast. We can always use drivers or just an extra person to ride along on the longer trips. Sometimes we just need someone to meet the transport at 5:30am on the day of departure and help load up the animals.
Register your MVP card: Register MVP card for the Food Lion Shop and Share program. A portion of sales is returned to the Humane Society of Amherst County every quarter.
Help at our Fall Festivals: We frequent local festivals with handouts about spay/neuter, pet adoption and the HSAC.
Help sell tickets for our big annual fund raiser, The Splendid Raffle, held in March each year. We also need helpers to run the festivities.
Help pets to find homes: We occasionally take adoptable animals to Wal Mart or other locations so that more people might find their special pet.
Sewing: We sew cat comforters and catnip toys to sell at our fundraising events.
T.E.A.: Thursday Evening Adoptions: Help out on Thursday evenings when our regular staff leaves for the day. Board members and volunteers stay until after 7pm to make adoptions and accept owner surrendered animals. This is also the time when a local vet comes to do health exams and we need help holding the animals.
Donations: We always need money but also a constant supply of kitty litter, cleaning supplies, paper towels, pet food, toys, old blankets and towels.
Grant writing: Are you good at writing grants? We frequently apply for grant money for our various programs and especially to fund our low cost spay/neuter program.
Please buy an "animal friendly" license plate. In 2008 the HSAC received over $500 from the county from the purchase of these plates.
If you are able to volunteer in any capacity, please contact us at 434-946-2340 or hsofac@gmail.com. Or feel free to come by the Adoption Center at 318 Shelter Lane, Amherst VA.
